Cool Video

Watch the full episode. See more NOVA.

Check out this cool video that explains why silver makes yellow and gold make ruby glass. Very interesting and easy to follow. It is chapter 5/6 from the show, but this is just the glass chapter. It also talks about how different sizes and shapes of silver particle make different colors of the rainbow. Now I understand the rainbow silver glasses that much more. COOL

New Year's Resolutions - Spend Less on Glass

Funny chart by David Houpt and is exactly my problem.

Do you have New Year's Resolutions for your craft/hobby/artwork? I have had goals/New Year’s Resolutions for the last two years. I did well 2 years ago with making brighter beads. I made lots of fun and bright beads and I have continued to try to do this.

Last years my goals were to: 1 - More intricate detail in designs for beads. (I sort of did more of this, but not in the direction I was thinking I wanted go go (but that is a good thing, right?)) 2 - Sculptural type beads. (I didn’t do this (frankly I forgot about it)). 3 - Increase in number of local galleries. (hmmm… I didn’t do this either (see #2)).

My silver glass drawer. I don't want to think about the money sitting there.

This year I have a simpler goal, spend less on glass. My original goal was going to be to spend no money on glass, but that is a little unrealistic. As many lampworkers will tell you, there are certain colors you cannot live without. For me I would like to say I can’t live without Clio or Gaia or Striking color, but in fact, I think I can (eek). At the bare minimum I need to use up the glass I have before I buy more. Plain and simple! I don’t NEED to buy glass just because it is on sale and a good deal. I WANT to buy glass what it is on sale.

The colors that are going to be on my exception list (but only to be bought when I’m out) are: clear, black, white and ivory (but Vetrofond Light Ivory every comes back, all bets are off!).

The draw with my least favorite colors (yellow, orange and red). That bundle in the middle, that is my 2nd pound of Coral Sunrise/Sunset (can't remember the name). I have another pound in my top drawer.

I spent an obscene amount on glass last year. I just added it up and it was over $1000. Sheesh, that is just crazy! A substantial amount of that was on Lori and Kim murrini, not the majority, but I was surprised when I looked at my month to month and saw how much it was. They make the prettiest murrini and I love the little pretty bits of glass. I actually use up their murrini fairly fast, but I have several baggies that have not been all used up. So, sorry to say to them, I will need to control the urge until ALL the murrini are used up before buying more. This will be difficult and I have already called on my friend and fellow lampworking Lori Bergmann to help me out and talk me down if I get out of control.

This summer is going to be difficult. I have two glass events. The first is the Glass Art Society conference in Seattle in June, I don’t know if they have vendors, but if they do I may have contorol issues. The second one is the Frantz Art Glass Bash. This is a big get together and sale at their shop in Shelton Washington. We’ll see how I’m doing year to date and if I’m doing great, I will splurge there for sure, gotta get those Double Helix odd lots when I can, right? Oh that sounds so bad, not in keeping up with the goals already.

As you can see, part of the problem are my glass boxes. I do not torch at my own home, but in my parent's garage. I would love a large cabinet with individual places for each color, but I wanted something that was a little smaller so that it didn't take up their entire garage and would be more kitty proof. However, what is hard to see in these photos (but maybe not) is that I have glass 3-4 layers deep. So, when I do go shopping, I think I need and color, but get home and find the colors. Yes I need a spread sheet, but I know myself, I won't keep it up well.

What are your New Year's Resolutions

NEW GLASS COLOR

I had the pleasure of opening up a new box of glass this week from Gaffer Glass USA. This special box arrived decorated with hearts and stars and sweet words from Hallynd, Jessica and Lacey. Thanks gals, you made my day. Inside the box was some Blue Chalcedony (G1095) rods and frit. It is a blue version of their normal Chalcedony, which has a red base.

This color also does the breaking up to form little cell-like decorations on the glass (this is my favorite part). I got some great blues, greens and purples from this glass.
These quick snapshots are my first beads (most of which will be heading back to Gaffer Glass USA). Like the original, the colors sometimes appear brighter when photographed.

PUMPKINS!!!!!

I don't know what it is about Halloween, but I love to make Halloween inspired beads. Orange is not my favorite color (in fact it is my least favorite), but I really enjoy making pumpkin beads and candy corns. I think it is the bright bold colors paired together that I like so much.
Speaking of pumpkins. I came across this video from the Corning Measuem of Glass. It is a glass pumpkin contast. Just up my alley. Now, I have a little paperweight sized pumpkin that I put out at Halloween at work and I just love it, but would LOVE a pumpkin this size (even though it is orange and would like take up 1/2 my bedroom). Check out their really cool mold to make the pumpkin shape. I think I like the creation of the stem the best.

ART FAIR SEASON

Katie in a funny hat.

I just love going to arts and crafts fairs. Here in the Seattle area there are so many different ones to choose from. I have my favorites for different reasons. This weekend was the University District Street Fair. I like this one mainly because it is the first one in the summer season. It has some nice stuff, but also some more crafty stuff. In this case that is good. You can see some artists that are just starting out selling and that is fun to see. This street fair is celebrating their 40th anniversery this year. Their website said that it is the oldest in the nation (not sure on that). This year I went with my mom and friends Katie and Tara.

I bought this cool barret from Ellen Kay another lampworker and she also fuses. What is so cool about this fused glass is that she first made twisties with a vitrigraph (vitrograph) then fused them into the barrett. Very cool. I have a top for work that this will match really well.

Another fun thing about art fairs is the people watching. This is Seattle Bag Man, a guy dressed in plastic bags to promote not using them.

I'M HONORED

The International Society of Glass Beadmakers (ISGB) placed a call for artists for an exhibit in connection with the Glass Art Society’s convention in Corning NY (June 11-13, 2009). This bead was accepted. I’m so honored to be included in this exhibit and it is one of the first I have been accepted in.

Here is the blurb from GAS:

Perspectives: Traditions and Innovations in Glass Beads. An international juried exhibition of contemporary glass beads, organized and presented by the International Society of Glass Beadmakers, and juried by Tina Oldknow (Curator of Modern Glass, Corning Museum of Glass)

If you are in NY in June, check out the
Glass Art Society 39th Annual Conference: Local Inspiration, Global Innovation

The collection can be viewed from June 5 to September 7 at the Radisson Hotel, Corning. In addition to the exhibition the top three beads with the highest jury scores will share the cover of the summer issue of The Glass Bead magazine, the quarterly publication from ISGB.

FUN WEEKEND - Bead Retreat

This last weekend the Fire and Rain and ORBS chapters had their second annual retreat at Frantz Art Glass. We had demos of bead making, glass colors/types, chain maille and photography.

A HUGE THANKS to Leslie Thiel for organizing the retreat and for Frantz for allowing us to use their facility.
Leslie watching Robin make a Sunflower pendant. The top photo is also Robin making the pendant.

Susan Mason blowing shards (paper thin layers of glass) with Laura Maddams looking on. The second photos is close up of the shards before they are broken up. Just little bubbled of glass.

BUNNIES

I rarely can pinpoint where I get my ideas for beads, but my bunny bead is an exception. I started making these beads last year around this time to get ready for Easter. I think they are super cute.

My mom has a Terra Cotta pot with a large Lop Rabbit on the front. Neither of us can remember the artist, but she got the pot at an art's fair in the Seattle area. This bunny is so sweet, look at that face. One day I was thinking about what to make next and I was looking at the pot and decided to try. Here you can see the pot with the circles drawn on where I was looking for the basics of the design.

First a drew a pattern on paper to get the shapes down, then did some dots on the bead and pushed and pulled the dots into ears, a face, and legs.

Tada..... bunny bead. Both of these bunnies are available on Etsy. I also have a bunny bead on Artfire. Check under the user name: Lutrick

Chalcedony - New Glass WOO HOO

I wanted to post a picture of the bead made of the glass mentioned below. This is Chalcedony, G109. It is very similar to Raku (R108), which I can not get to do anything for me. (I also can't get color with TerraNova, Khaos, or Luna2). I get tan and blah. Not with this one. I get reds, purples, pinks, oranges, blues and greens. This was the one with the best colors. Chalcedony on Black.

SPRING TIME, WHEN WILL IT COME?

Ok, so I know spring will come on March 20th, but it seems to take forever to get here. I always look forward to the flowering trees in this area. I love the smell of a cherry tree in blossom, it is not a sweet smell, but a crisp new smell that I love.

Many thanks to Marcy Lamberson and the ladies at the blog Watch Me Create for including my spring etsy treasury on their blog. It is always exciting to see myself mentioned in someone else's blog.

Here is a link to their spring write up.

ART FIRE

I have decided to set up an Art Fire account. This is a selling site similar to Etsy. One of my posts below talked about my New Year's Resolution to make bright beads. I have made some bright ones and listed them at Art Fire. Check my new shop out at: http://www.lutrick.artfire.com/.
