ART - Glass Beads and Wood in Collaboration

I thought I would share some more non-jewelry applications for beads. I'm showing more collaborative work with my dad, David Lutrick, who is a woodturner. My dad is using my beads to accent his turned vessels.

I have given dad a lot of beads to use over the years as toppers for boxes (see below). These are usually beads that I was not 100% happy with (usually the colors didn't turn out like I wanted, or the end isn't perfect). Once he gets done with them, you can't tell. These little boxes are iron-wood (the dark) with cherry (maybe it is Madrone, I'm not sure).

Dad decided after 2 bags full, to use some of these beads to make Art, with a capital "A." The photo above is an in progress picture. He made this large flat Maple flat vessel (it is 21.75 inches in diameter x 4.5 inches tall). The beads are strung on stainless steal wire (ok mandrel rods, uncut) and bow up and out away from the wood. We are not sure how the public will respond to this Art, but it is always fun to work with my dad.

We didn't count the beads, but estimated there are 110 beads by me. See the tape measure for size comparison.

So, this was the weekend and dad had his booth at the Artfair. It was a long three days but he said he was glad he went.

BRAGGING ON MY DAD

Back in April I wrote here about my dad and his woodworking. He borrowed my camera recently and it came home with some pictures, so I thought I would share.

My dad, David Lutick, has been woodworking for as long as I can remember and recently started making these cool Sea Urchin Ornaments. He uses farm raised Sea Urchins and turns wooden finials to be placed at the top and bottom.

WOOD AND GLASS

I thought I would share some non-jewelry applications for beads. Many lampworkers started to make beads to use in our jewelry and I use beads for jewelry most of the time. Recently I have started to collaborate with my father, David Lutrick, who is a woodturner. My dad is using my beads to accent his turned vessels.

Last summer my dad and I entered two items for ConneXtions: A Collaborative Effort Between Wood and Glass. This show was in conjunction with the International Society of Glass Beads (ISGB) 2007 yearly convention in Minneapolis and the local gallery of the American Association of Woodturners in St. Paul MN. I am a member of the former and my dad the latter.


In the first picture you see a stem of this Goblet made with my beads and the cup and the foot made by my dad. Beads are Gaia, Ivory, Brown & Clear glass and the wood is Cherry. This was my design.






The second picture was my father's design. Beads are Ivory decorated with shards of Gaia, Kronos and dots of Opal yellow. The wood is Cherry.


In the third picture is a group shot of some of our more recent items. The bowl on the far left is Cherry with a Walnet finial. The center item is Madrone with a finial of Walnet and the bowl on the right is Madrone with a Iron Wood finial.
